Political observers on Monday said U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon “engaged herself in obstruction of justice” by ruling that the U.S. Department of Justice must halt its review of materials seized at former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago.

Cannon, who was appointed by the former Republican president and confirmed after he lost the 2020 election, ruled that Trump “faces an unquantifiable potential harm by way of improper disclosure of sensitive information to the public” if the review of the materials, which included documents marked “confidential” and “top secret” continues.

Political scientist Norman Ornstein noted that lawyers for Trump hand-picked Cannon to oversee the case.

Cannon “has violated her oath and is unfit for the bench,” he tweeted, adding that her ruling is “a clear-cut impeachable offense.”

Slate journalist Mark Joseph Stern said he had been assured that “no judge would take Trump’s absurd filing seriously” after the former president sued the DOJ over the FBI raid which was sparked by the department’s finding that Trump had taken classified documents from the White House when his term ended in January 2021.

“The problem, of course, is that Cannon is not a real judge, but a Trump judge, and one of the most corrupt of the bunch,” said Stern.

Cannon ruled that a “special master” should be appointed to review the materials seized by the FBI and said the federal government should be “temporarily enjoined” from examining the documents further.

The Justice Department now has until September 9 to propose a list of special master candidates. It was unclear Monday whether the Biden administration would appeal Cannon’s ruling.

  1. It probably won’t matter who the government chooses as the ‘spacial master’ – they will be objected to by Trump’s lawyers and his judge. They will propsoe their own and expect him to be given ultra-top secret clearance and allow him to read the names on the affidavit (and then tell Trump who blew the whistle)

    • Trump isn’t President anymore, and can’t do what he did with Jared (and others) and simply overrule those who evaluate the results of background investigations and make recommendations yes or no on a given level of security clearance. And, even if the conservative circuit down there backs up this judge it will be headed to SCOTUS and in the middle of a primary election it WILL be talked about in the news. Even this SCOTUS isn’t going to give Trump what he wants and while he’s not throwing ketchup bottles at the wall I’d imagine Chief Justice Robert’s anger is as hot as Trump’s! This judge has just shit her bench. I’d imagine even The Federalist Society is furious with her right now because she’s one of their products (or she’d have never been nominated in the first place) and is only around forty. She had decades ahead to do Roberts type stuff pushing their agenda and in a lower profile position – from a conservative circuit and since SCOTUS takes up relatively few cases she could have made a lot of the law they wanted made under the radar. THAT is now gone. Every decision she hands down for years, if not for the rest of her career is going to be scrutinized which is the last thing The Federalist Society wanted from her. When this shitstorm passes I wouldn’t be surprised if within a year she gets a fabulously well paying offer to practice corporate law (maybe with Wal Mart like that gal at DOJ early in Trump’s term that didn’t want to deal with the outrage from EITHER side over the Trump/Comey mess) and decides to move on.

    • Yes – the language of everyone is getting so bad it makes the points unreadable. If you hope to persuade others towards your point of view, keep it decent – some of us only read this site occasionally, and filthy language is a real turnoff for civilized folks !
