Kevin McCarthy’s Worst Nightmare. What If She WINS?!?

I can’t get enough of this shit. By now, you all know both my personal feelings, as well as my professional assessment of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. He is the most craven, cowardly, sniveling worm in the history of American politics. And he just keeps on proving it.

You can always tell when somebody is doing something bad, and they know it. They keep trying to find ways to somehow or other legitimize their dirty deeds. It was only weeks ago that McCarthy held a secret ballot to determine whether or not to strip GOP Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney of her leadership post in the GOP. And now, on Wednesday, he’s going to do it again.

Here’s the Cliff’s Notes version. Kevin McCarthy is so close to Donald Trump that he knows his designer underwear size, because he’s seen the label form the inside. His loyalty to Trump is absolute. On the other hand, Liz Cheney did the unthinkable, and voted to impeach Donald Trump in his second trial. And like McCarthy, she also directly blamed Trump from inciting the January 6th Capitol riot, but didn’t crawl back down from the ledge in the next days. She insists that the GOP must move on from Trump’s Big Lie bullshit and look forward, and not back.

So the question is, why the secret ballot? Because it turns out that there are a whole bunch of GOP House bottom feeders who think that Trump is the wave of the future, but whose actual constituents might disagree rather strongly. If it were a simple floor vote, the members vote would be next to their name, and it would be embarrassing if that leaked to their constituents. The secret ballot takes care of that.

But that sword slashes both ways. In her previous recall vote, Cheney laughed her way into retention of her seat of power. Now granted, this time McCarthy will not be actively whipping votes for Cheney, he’ll likely be whipping votes against her. But the whole point is that nothing has changed! Cheney hasn’t flown off of the rails, she simply continues to insist that Trump is an albatross around the GOP’s neck, and needs to be but loose. And as long as the ballot is secret, and McCarthy can’t identify specific members to single out and punish for their votes, why would they change their minds?

This is Kevin McCarthy’s dilemma. The simple protection he needs to provide to vulnerable House members to vote to oust Cheney is the exact same one that protects the members who are more traditional and ready to vote for Cheney. I don’t see that anything in the equation has changed sufficiently to force Cheney votes away from her if they’re safely secret. And the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Because if Cheney survives this second recall vote, with Wimp McCarthy whipping against her, than that means that the House GOP is in a state of crisis. Because while Trump may have a majority of the caucus in his pocket, there is a virulent Trump resistance out there that will act to move the party forward. And with an announcement coming on Thursday of a principled resistance to the rump Trump GOP, all hell is going to break loose. I never in my life thought that I would be cheering for Liz Cheney, but I sure as hell am now!

    • I’ve never seen that particular attribution but it’s still a couple of centuries late (and is certainly incorrect regardless).

The saying appears as “The king who is situated anywhere immediately on the circumference of the conqueror’s territory is termed the enemy. The king who is likewise situated close to the enemy, but separated from the conqueror only by the enemy, is termed the friend (of the conqueror).” in Book VI of the Arthashastra by Kautilya (whose identity hasn’t been absolutely identified), which dates as early as 2 centuries BCE.

Also, the Imam Ali could NOT have lived in 4BC as the very idea of “imam” is a Muslim title which could only date from the 7th century CE (that’s a full 7 centuries after “4BC”).

At any rate, the saying (or some form of it) is old and has probably been used by dozens, if not hundreds, of cultures around the world. (It’s kind of like “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” That phrasing is described as a Klingon saying and remains, in popular culture, as such. But, the actual IDEA traces back to a number of cultures and traditions but, before “Star Trek” came along and made it famous, none had expressed it in those exact terms.)

  1. Any Republican that believes in The Big Lie needs to schedule an appointment with a psychologist in the near future. Being that the vote is secret and you are protected by this, I believe Liz Cheney will keep her seat. She is completely mentally stable and has bigger balls than most of her constituents

    • She is also deep state. This is why we’re in this mess. How many Democrats and Republicans over 65, 70 years old and run our country. And we wonder why we’re in this mess. Get rid of these senile deep state people that never held a real job or knows what its like to live in an apartment and don’t have enough money.

  2. I just believe the GOP leadership has gone over the edge. No clear mission. No clear vision. And certainly no leadership. They are misreading the Trump effect. I voted for him twice but no longer support him or have any respect for his childish impetuous actions. I believe many feel the same way.

  3. “So the question is, why the secret ballot? Because it turns out that there are a whole bunch of GOP House bottom feeders who think that Trump is the wave of the future, but whose actual constituents might disagree rather strongly. If it were a simple floor vote, the members vote would be next to their name, and it would be embarrassing if that leaked to their constituents. The secret ballot takes care of that.”

There’s also the converse point: “Because it turns out that there are a whole bunch of GOP House members who think that Trump is the past that needs to go away, but whose actual constituents might disagree rather strongly. If it were a simple floor vote, the members vote would be next to their name, and it would be embarrassing if that leaked to their constituents. The secret ballot takes care of that.” See, Murf, it works both ways. With the secret ballot, Trump won’t be able to personally attack any single member who dared oppose his will by voting to keep Cheney.

  4. Two comments: First, Joe, McCarthy is “the most craven, cowardly, sniveling worm in the history of American politics” ???? Pullllleeeeeze, that honor belongs, second to none, to Mitch McConnell. McCarthy can’t even hold his jockstrap in the “sniveling, worm, worthless piece of garbage-feces in the history of American politics sweepstakes”. There is just no one ever as vile as McConnell, even Trump. McConnell is one for the ages, edging out even Trump. McCarthy will be forgotten forever the day he loses his seat.

The second comment is Joe, I actually disagree with you. I think it’s the opposite, though Kevin is way too stupid to understand it. If Liz WINS, it’s the best thing for him because she just might save the party and by extension, his waning relevance. If she loses, he will control a party that will probably lose any and all relevance and hopefully will not do anywhere near as well as pundits fear, next year. In short, the best thing that could happen to McCarthy is he loses the fight and Cheney wins. He doesn’t see that, but I believe it to still be so.

  5. I saw on the PBS news hour the other day, where a lady said that there are certain republicans who were ready to sanction Cheney the first time. The trouble was that Marjorie Taylor Green was up for a dressing down at the same time. They felt like they couldn’t let Green off the hook and then punish Cheney. Now it’s Cheney by herself and they may vote differently. I don’t honestly know if she has inside info or just conjecturing.

  6. I want to be a fly on the wall in the maga kingdom when she wins, it will be screeching insanity and the fool’s rage will burn his palace down.
