I suppose anything is possible. After all, P.T. Barnum made the comment, “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public” and we have certainly seen that to be true in recent years. Bill Cosby, fresh from the slammer, is thinking about going back to stand up comedy in nightclubs. The Hill:

Cosby has been “been talking to a number of promoters and comedy club owners” and is “just excited the way the world is welcoming him back,” Andrew Wyatt told reporters on Thursday, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Wyatt told Inside Edition that “a number of promoters have called. Comedy club owners have called. People want to see him.” […]

“He is not released because he is innocent,” tweeted Lisa Bloom, an attorney representing three of Cosby’s accusers. “He is released because a prosecutor promised him years ago that he would not be brought to justice, without even making a deal for him to do time.”

More than 60 women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, usually involving drugs.

Bloom has reportedly warned that he could face defamation claims if he goes on tour claiming vindication or casting aspersions on his accusers.

Yeah, what would be wrong with him making a lot of date rape jokes?

His lawyers made it sound like he was at death’s door, now he’s going to return to the stage? And joke about what, exactly?

This could get very strange.

  1. If a comedian, even one who once achieved great celebrity tells a joke (even a great one) in the woods (well, a room filled with what used to be trees but are now empty wood chairs) and no one is there to hear it is it still funny?

Bill Cosby is a serial rapist. The end of his story should have been him dying in prison. Any club that offers him a venue to perform will, if there is any justice (and sadly I doubt there is in this case) go out of business. Quickly.

  2. We can hope for your described outcome. The problem is the taste and judgement of the general public has been somewhat interesting in recent years. So I think it remains to be seen.

  3. I used to enjoy his comedy, but now I think back on some of those routines and wonder how he was treating his wife, because they seem cruel to her. (“Noah” and “Chickenheart” are still fairly funny, though.)
