Mike Pompeo is not exactly knockin’ ’em dead in Munich at the Security Conference this week. He had already given the usual Trump economy sound bite, where unemployment is non existent, a lobster in every pot and a Mercedes in every driveway — to hear him tell it — and that was met by stone silence. Then it went downhill from there. Agence France-Presse via Raw Story:

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Pompeo sought to assuage European anxiety over the transatlantic bond under an unpredictable President Donald Trump, saying: “The West is winning and we’re winning together.”

But he was immediately contradicted by French President Emmanuel Macron, who warned of “a weakening of the West”.

Other countries are not run by compete fools — ours is. And the speeches at the conference were grounded in the new reality of international relations and world order since Donald Trump has disgraced the world stage.

In his opening speech a day earlier, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier suggested that the United States rejected “even the idea of an international community” and was acting “at the expense of neighbours and partners”.

“Those statements don’t reflect reality,” Pompeo retorted.

“I’m happy to report that the death of the transatlantic alliance is grossly over-exaggerated,” he added, paraphrasing a famous Mark Twain quote.

Pompeo went on to say that the U.S. is keeping Europe safe by reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank bordering with Russia, which is an interesting perspective, considering that Trump selling out our Syrian allies had the net effect of not only adding to the destabilization of the region but resulted in giving Vladimir Putin another warm water port to play with. And  President Macron had a few more words.

The US was undergoing “a rethink of its relationship with Europe”, Macron said, strengthening his belief that the continent had to take charge of its own destiny.

“We need a European strategy that renews us and turn us into a strategic political power,” he said.

The thought process in Europe is that it’s time to make contingency plans because our allies can no longer rely on the United States. And if Donald Trump gets reelected, that concept will end up cemented in stone and decades of work, if not the past two and a half centuries of international diplomacy, will be undone. This is how corrosive an effect the incompetent Trump regime has had in the world. It takes a long time to build something, but to destroy the same thing takes very little time.

I hope that he is not re-elected and our next president can make good on our prior promises.

Do more than hope, Tin. Help make it happen, however you can. This is an all hands on deck moment.

I think one of the problems is that the parties are so far apart now, not just ideologically but goals and mission — Republicans truly want a class society with themselves in charge and everyone else in poverty — that turning the WH back and forth between the two does nothing to improve alliances or trust. Ditto Congress. The country needs a firm platform on which everyone, each party, agrees, and it needs to be stable and set in concrete. Even if it’s just “Protect Alliances, the less fortunate, the planet and all within her.” I don’t know how that… Read more »

We already have a couple. One is the Constitution, the other The Bill of Rights. Unfortunately, both have been trampled by both democrats and republiCLOWNS for so long, neither comprehend them anymore. That’s why bloomberg and biden both need to shut the f up.

Maybe Democrats should stop “balancing” every GOP rightward lurch with one of their own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajy-_QZUouM

When I see those statements by Pompeo, I hear James McAvoy screaming, “Shut the **** UUUUUP!” We get it; you need to make your boss happy and your knowledge of international diplomacy is on par with your grasp of nuclear physics. But Heru Sa Eset, man, don’t insult the intelligence of the country you’re in by treating them like MAGA maggots.

I hope he’s not elected but also that we don’t elect a billionaire that not democracy that just a buy. We need someone who has an inside track

I guess they didn’t literally laugh in his face like the U.N. General Assembly did to his boss in 2018! Of course, with Putin making steady progress on re-establishing the old USSR there’s nothing the least bit funny from the leaders at a Security Conference.

They weren’t buying it, though.

Well, for those who aren’t keeping up with some other goings-on in Europe, it seems that Trump’s British “buddy,” Boris (“Really, folks, I’m NOT a Russian operative despite my obviously Russian-sounding name”) Johnson is making a bit of a power grab by effectively taking over the Exchequer (sort of the UK’s version of the Treasury Department but with a touch of the Fed as well) by dumping the previous Chancellor of the Exchequer and installing someone he felt was more “in line” with his own “vision.” Johnson’s previous Chancellor, Sajid Javid, was appointed BY JOHNSON back in July but there… Read more »

That idiot didn’t actually think he could match wits with European leaders. That lady reporter over the map spanked his ass and sent him to bed without supper. Pompee has got to be one of the dumbest ones in trumps cabinet. If he still has one. Not sure about that. Don’t bother keeping up on who’s who in trump world.

All I could think about when Pompeo was spewing Trump’s bullsh*t was how insulted those women in the audience were. European countries have had women in extremely powerful government positions for many decades. They are respected leaders in their own right. They know all about Trump’s treatment of women and how Christian men like Pompeo feel about the rights of women. They had to be incredibly insulted just having to listen to his blatant lies as if they were unaware of the truth.

I would change that to unchristian men like Pompeo. Just sayin’

As long as men like Pompeo and Barr publicly tout their religion as part of their superiority, they are effectively the face of Christianity. I am sorry but that religion leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. And I’ve heard all of the arguments about how they aren’t “real” Christians. Maybe but I’m not convinced. I have seen and heard too much ugliness from Christians over the years.

Trump is a gross person but he is not incompetent concerning Europe. As soon as he got back from his first trip to the USSR back in 1987 he took out full page ads slamming NATO, etc. He has been a Russian tool for a long time. This is a simple easily provable fact that the MSM and the entire Republican cult refuses to admit. Yes, he looks and acts stupid, but he has done all that Putin wants that he can get away with.
