John Kelly has made it clear that he’s opposed to Donald Trump. A few weeks ago in Florida Kelly went on record saying that John Bolton was a man of great integrity and principle and that he trusted Bolton to tell the truth. Now, in a recent article in The Atlantic, Kelly has characterized Alexander Vindman as “blameless” and  said he was right in not following “an illegal order.” These words apparently had the effect of pushing Donald Trump further into the crazy zone.

It’s no wonder that this drove Trump nuts, because he wants the Army to discipline Vindman further and here Kelly is saying that Vindman’s conduct was flawless. The Atlantic:

“He did exactly what we teach them to do from cradle to grave,” Kelly told the audience at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. “He went and told his boss what he just heard.”

“Through the Obama administration up until that phone call, the policy of the U.S. was militarily to support Ukraine in their defensive fight against … the Russians,” Kelly said. “And so, when the president said that continued support would be based on X, that essentially changed. And that’s what that guy [Vindman] was most interested in.”

When Vindman heard the president tell Zelensky he wanted to see the Biden family investigated, that was tantamount to hearing “an illegal order,” Kelly said. “We teach them, ‘Don’t follow an illegal order. And if you’re ever given one, you’ll raise it to whoever gives it to you that this is an illegal order, and then tell your boss.’”

If you don’t think them’s fightin’ words, try these, with respect to Kim Jong Un:

“He will never give his nuclear weapons up,” Kelly said. “Again, President Trump tried—that’s one way to put it. But it didn’t work. I’m an optimist most of the time, but I’m also a realist, and I never did think Kim would do anything other than play us for a while, and he did that fairly effectively.”

And then Kelly went after Trump’s mentor and idol, Vladimir Putin:

At times Wednesday, Kelly sounded like the anti-Trump. He said he did not believe the press is “the enemy of the people,” for example. And he sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom Trump has steadfastly courted. Kelly described Putin as someone who is “not necessarily a rational actor.” Putin sits atop “a society in collapse,” yet is intent on restoring “the glory days of the Soviet Union,” he said.

And then it got even worse:

Kelly said most migrants are merely looking for jobs. “In fact, they’re overwhelmingly good people … They’re not all rapists and they’re not all murderers. And it’s wrong to characterize them that way. I disagreed with the president a number of times.”

If there’s one must-read article of the day, it’s this Atlantic piece. It’s obviously got Trump foaming at the mouth. It appears that John Kelly is trying to stitch back together the tatters of his reputation and take Trump down a peg or two at the same time. Good. Carry on.

He could start stitching together his reputation when he publicly apologizes to Frederica Wilson.

Good on Kelly. But I’ll never forgive him for the empty barrel comment with no apology when he was proven wrong.

Now it fighting words how about when it wasn’t. He stood and watched and said as many terrible words about people of color and now he’s the good guy. Not buying it, and his whiteness was showing thru.

Men like him make me ashamed to be a white man…and angry for him going along to get along.

What seems screamingly obvious, is that himself is the one that cannot keep their mouth shut, or am I wrong?

You’re not wrong…and I’m pissed that Kelly kept HIS shut for this long. Convenient timing, wouldn’t you say?

I’ll admit that I’ll enjoy seeing Kelly call Trump out – having gone as far as he has I don’t see him stopping because he knows Trump will keep trying to trash him. Having said that, Kelly IS after all the architect of the brutal DHS policies that were enacted at the border even if the impetus came from Sessions/Stephen Miller convincing Trump to order them. If as he now seems to want us to believe Trump was over-the-top on the issue then he should have done what he’s praising Vindman for – recognize an illegal order/something improper and speak… Read more »

If you could boil it all down, it’d come to this: given a chance to do something, he chose to do nothing…repeatedly. That, I can never forgive.

It’s too bad Kelly was in favor of all that when he was IN the WH.

John Kelly is a despicable human being and speaking up now doesn’t do any more than riling up Trump. Nothing will change. Why didn’t he step up to the plate during the impeachment hearings? Too little too late for Col. Vindman, his brother, as well as the other career officials who testified under oath. John Kelly remains a racist, a xenophobe & a coward. History will record him as a traitor to his country & his military code of honor. Reading everyone lauding this man on social media sickens me even with “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”… Read more »

On this, we agree, yaya. He’s being an opportunist and I’m treating him as such. Great quote from Blade 2 as written by David Goyer: “What am I to you? Is the enemy of my enemy my friend…or my enemy?” In Kelly’s case, he shall always be the second.

I welcome Kelly’s comments but I curse him for his chickenhawk courage. Only NOW, when the situation has gotten as bad as it has, when there’s a separate center of political power, does he bother to speak. I can respect the likes of a Rick Wilson or a Jennifer Rubin, who opposed Trump from the start. I have no such respect for a man who disgraced his uniform and country working as an adjunct to Julius Geezer only to try to reform his rep when the wind changes.

Trump is the one who can’t keep his mouth shut. He’s so busy fabricating lies he no longer has a grasp on the truth and lashes out at people like Kelly. I am glad Kelly finally found his balls and told trump off!
