Bill Barr must have a short memory, or else he’s exceptionally dense. Or perhaps he’s just overcome with the hubris that seems to infect everyone in Donald Trump’s orbit like it’s an airborne virus. Just last month, Bill Barr was purportedly impressing upon Trump that Rudy Giuliani was becoming problematic, to no avail, because Trump wouldn’t cut him loose. Now, Lev Parnas has told Rachel Maddow that Barr “had to have known everything” about Giuliani’s actions in Ukraine to get an announcement of an investigation into Joe Biden. According to former U.S. prosecutor Gene Rossi that would amount to conspiracy to bribe.

I can tell Mr. Rossi where the beloved Justice Department is. They’re busy pursuing Trump’s political enemies. The New York Times has a story today, “Justice Department Investigating Years-Old Leaks and Appears Focused On Comey.” Trump is very focused on James Comey. Trump bizarrely disparaged Comey in front of China’s Vice Premier Liu He and senior administration officials at the White House Wednesday. Trump called upon Senator Chuck Grassley, who happened to be in attendance. Raw Story:

“Chuck, will you stand up for a second?” Trump said.

“He made Comey choke during the hearing,” the President continued, praising Grassley’s questioning of former FBI Director James Comey during a 2017 hearing. “Comey choked like a dog and he was being nice when he said it,” Trump continued, still addressing Grassley.

It’s vintage Trump, cheap abuse. The full sentence Trump said to Grassley is, “Chuck asked Comey in a tough voice ‘Did you leak?'” and then the “choked like a dog” crack. In the same 24 hours, we have this article in the Times.

Federal prosecutors in Washington are investigating a years-old leak of classified information about a Russian intelligence document, and they appear to be focusing on whether the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey illegally provided details to reporters, according to people familiar with the inquiry.

The case is the second time the Justice Department has investigated leaks potentially involving Mr. Comey, a frequent target of President Trump, who has repeatedly called him a “leaker.” Mr. Trump recently suggested without evidence that Mr. Comey should be prosecuted for “unlawful conduct” and spend years in prison.

The timing of the investigation could raise questions about whether it was motivated at least in part by politics. Prosecutors and F.B.I. agents typically investigate leaks of classified information around the time they appear in the news media, not years later. And the inquiry is the latest politically sensitive matter undertaken by the United States attorney’s office in Washington, which is also conducting an investigation of Mr. Comey’s former deputy, Andrew G. McCabe, that has been plagued by problems.

If there is a witch hunt in Washington, this is it. Barr is weaponizing the resources of the Department of Justice to do Donald Trump’s dirty work. And of course it goes without saying that Barr denies what Lev Parnas is putting forth about  his involvement in Ukraine.

Barr is even further up the creek than Mike Pompeo. Politics has always had the potential to be feral and Machiavellian, there’s no question about that. But in the past three years Trump has been in office, political disagreements have become predatory and menacing as never before. The swamp is not only alive and well, it’s filled with flesh eating bacteria and glowing in the dark. And Bill Barr is one of the more dangerous carnivores thrashing around in the weeds.

Great metaphor at the end!
Let’s hope Barr does go the way of John Mitchell. All this gets scarier every day…

“Bill Barr must have a short memory, or else he’s exceptionally dense.” “Or else?” Why “or else?” I’m ready to say “Bill Barr has a short memory AND he’s exceptionally dense.” I mean, working for Trump means you need to have a short memory (hell, Trump can say one thing today and tomorrow, he’s saying exactly the opposite, then the day after tomorrow, he’s repeating today’s comment and swear he *never* said anything different, even when confronted by video and/or audio evidence) and working for Trump means you have to be incredibly dense at a minimum (in this sense, density… Read more »

Himself can reverse his words in less than a minute. All his people must be able to nod their heads every time.
