Major Evangelical Magazine Blasts Trump Followers With Blistering Truth

Alright, this is stunning.

We here are rightly damned critical of the evangelical community, pretty much all the time. Thus, it is only fair to note when at least some of them brave serious blowback by publishing something that actually comports with Christianity.

It is not just “any” magazine, either. It is Christianity Today, founded by Billy Graham.

They lay out some truth for their readers:

“Let’s grant this to the president: The Democrats have had it out for him from day one, and therefore nearly everything they do is under a cloud of partisan suspicion,” wrote chief editor Mark Galli. “But the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.”

Okay, I’ll admit they’re right that we have had it out for Trump since day one. Personally, I have had it out for Trump since a 1991 article in Vanity Fair lead me to conclude; “This guy is a world class asshole.” To be fair, he has changed since then. He has gotten much much worse. He no longer has the ability to even fake being human.

So yes, we have had it out for him, and I guess you could call it a partisan cloud. But I would only note that the immorality that they cite, has been blatantly obvious since … well, 1991, but especially so since announcing his run.

“The reason many are not shocked about this is that this president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration,” continued Galli. “He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.”

Not true, it is actually much worse. But we’ll take it.

This is really where they find the right tone, right argument, deserving of righteous praise:

“Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency. If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?”

No, you cannot, and I am glad you see that, because you are correct. If you had continued to make excuses, you wouldn’t be worth listening to ever.

You still have a shitload to reflect upon, the insipient racism, the violent culture, and the indifference to suffering. BUT, you are actually reflecting, and because you are known to actually believe the begats over evolution, hopefully your answer will begat further humility and honesty.

I have to mention one more thing in an already long article. This was damned brave. They know that their subscriptions and therefore their salaries are largely paid for by a community they are scolding. The community they address is one that doesn’t often question themselves, preferring to righteously assert their superiority and holiness. A large number of their readers will find the article repulsive and worth cancelling a subscription.

They did the right thing anyway. That’s brave. Good on them, truly, no snark at all.

The magazine was founded by Billy Graham, father of Franklin Graham, one of Trump’s most unapologetic supporters, and one of the few Americans that can go pound for pound with Trump in hypocrisy and obsession with wealth, power and women.

It just makes it even better to consider that Franklin Graham perfectly embodies the type of person called out as immoral.

Oh, wait, as an aside, did I mention that they call for his ouster from office? They went all the way.

Testify!

****

Peace, y’all

I was not expecting anything like this at all. Very good news. I am confused though. Is this publication connected with franklin graham? Is he cutting trump loose?

Anyone who’s been looking for good news, I can’t stress how big a deal this is. I’m naturally suspicious of their motives, much like I am of the Lincoln Project. Everything talked about in that editorial that was critical of Trump has been said for three long years. Unless Mr. Galli just woke up from a four-year coma, there’s no way he couldn’t have noticed any of it before now. But to say this now? Just ahead of what will be a very ugly 2020 election season? That’s them acknowledging that they’ve lost far more than they ever gained from… Read more »

White evangelicals have been in denial for a long time. It is human. Also white evangelical churches have become more insular as they basically drove away the members who objected to Trump.

They are still pushing the unconstitutional stance of being anti-abortion. Maybe since they corrupted the courts with hundreds more anti-American republican judges that will decide that some how the constitution endorses the government telling woman they can only have sex if they are making babies, they feel they don’t need Trump anymore and can cut him loose. Southern Baptist ran off all the liberal preachers years ago. The thugs had a complete takeover of the convention in the early 90’s. As I remember it, the Southern Baptist lobbied for ending forced prayer in schools for the selfserving reason that Christians… Read more »

I have often wondered how Christians square the circle with tRump.
Is it all just about getting a SCOTUS that will overturn Roe v Wade and uniting Israel to bring about the end times?
Surely Pence would give them that and more. Plus he actually believes it, unlike his boss.
