Russian Owned Company Hacked Ohio Voting Office on Election Day

A Russian-owned company tried to hack the Ohio office that oversees the state’s voting systems on Election Day, according to Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, as reported by an article in Salon.

If that doesn’t scare the ever living shit out of you, I’ve got nothing.

Secretary of State LaRose downplayed the attack as “relatively unsophisticated,” whatever the hell that means.

“Some of these unsophisticated attacks are ways that they probe for vulnerabilities. They are poking around for soft spots,” LaRose explained.

He went on to credit the state’s “Albert” alert system that quickly identified the attack. “The good guys won that day and the bad guys lost,” he said.

No, asshole, that is not necessarily true, for a whole shitload of reasons.

The first reason, being, of course, is that a successful attack on your database is one that isn’t even detectedand there is a chance that a sophisticated organization like …oh … the Russian military, might do two or more attacks, some very haphazard, all to cover the most subtle attack.

Second, this “unsophisticated” attack may have just been probing your weaknesses, preparing for next year.

Last, jackass, it is never good, ever ever ever good, to learn that Russians – it is always Russians, want to interfere with our government generally, and elections specifically.

As an aside, while we are lecturing Sec. Larose for his glib comments, we ought to note that Secretary Larose is a Republican. In its current form, we have precious little evidence that the Republican party of 2019 can be trusted to tell us the truth about these matters, nor necessarily trusted to defend hacking designed to help Republicans. We might not necessarily even trust a Republican to not take a phone call from the White House, stating that he is to stop speaking about it. Call us paranoid.

Larose can characterize this as “great” all he wants. This is not “great” at all, and we keep hearing about vulnerabilities after the fact. Moreover, we keep hearing about more and more vulnerabilities, many are cited in the above article. As just one example:

Though voting machines are not supposed to connect to the internet for security reasons, some machine analysts have discovered remote-access software on machines in key swing states and other flaws that could expose the systems to hacking. Motherboard recently reported that election systems in 10 different states have connected to the internet in the last year.

It is infuriating to me that we would be just as angry reading about a company based in India attempting to hack into systems and change every vote to the Democrat. It would infuriate us, as it would cast “doubts” upon the 2020 results, results that we intend to win by, you know, winning.

This is terrifying. If Trump is looking for a reason to suspend the next election, or question its results, he has it. Russians continue to hack our system. We have yet to see Trump actually do anything in office that materially hurts him in some way. “Stepping down,” after an election, would be an act that “hurts” him dearly. No one ought to be presuming Trump will “do the right thing” at this point, no matter how obvious. As I said just a week ago, think about how far we’ve come in just a year with regard to Trump wholly unifying the Republican party around his cult.

Of course, none of this would be nearly as big a problem if we had a Republican party that actually cared more about our constitution and nation than their own party politics. Unfortunately, we have the opposite. We have a Republican party that is aching to assist the Russians in this exploitation. Just yesterday we heard more Republicans parroting the “Ukraine worked on behalf of Hillary” talking point, a talking point created on the banks of the frozen as fck Volga river. The Republicans are fine with doing away with democracy as long as they do away with Democrats while doing it.

Where is the uproar?

Where is our president? Shouldn’t he be on national TV saying something like: “If I hear of any election interference, public or private, traced back to any foreign nation, the United States will consider it an act of war, and will bomb the originating location. If you e-bomb us, we will “real-bomb” you. Fair warning. After 2016, the United States will not stand-by and allow it all to happen again.”

End of problem, if the world believed that president.

But we don’t have a president. We have a cult-leader of the Russian party, leading his cult-followers in an effort to destroy the enemy, us. WE are the “enemy” in Trump’s mind, not foreign governments attempting to break democracy and western liberalism. WE are the enemy, and that is why he is not on TV talking about it, and it will not be a national priority.

****

Peace, y’all, except for people and organizations that screw with our underlying democracy.

Thanks Jason. The baby Putin puppets, “Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.”

I am so sick of the term ‘partisan’. The Republican lies on top of lies to cover up the disgusting criminality and treason of their terrorist organization and the patriots fight for the constitution is not a partisan squabble.

Sorry, for getting off point. Also sitting here listening to the bothsiderist on MSNBC.

We are at war. Why do so many of us not realize it? Maybe they’re waiting for uniformed soldiers to parachute in or some such shit. Wake up people! The enemy doesn’t have to come here, they’re ALREADY here!

While they cannot attack or do anything to actual voting in Ohio, they could maybe cause some internal chaos in offices. Since I don’t trust Frank LaRose, I’m skeptical that he might be trying to deliberately stir up confusion because Democrats are so sick to bite on the phony “They can change our vote totals!” narrative, and make Democrats look stupid. No machines are NOT (not “not supposed to be”) connected to the Internet, and no, there isn’t anything that could “expose them to hacking.” Also, may I point out that an “election system” is not a “voting machine” and… Read more »

Some people in some counties in PA may beg to differ with you about whether meddlers are Russian, Russian assets, small fry who work over voting machines and votes for some democrats are just poofed off the system. Nobody needs this crap today or in the primaries. I, for one, don’t want MY vote to be subverted so it goes to a candidate I don’t want to represent me— like Bloomberg or Biden. I think that the most feared candidate by Russia is Elizabeth Warren or maybe Pete Buttigeig. I’m not down with losing out to Russian influence. Sorry if… Read more »

They can “differ” with me, just as rabid Trump supporters do, but too many are consuming conspiracy theories. Buying into this CT about vote changing is a distraction from the reality of how they are gaming elections: voter suppression and propaganda, not tampering with voting machines, which has never in any U.S. election been shown to be possible. As for who the Russians “fear” most, it’s anyone who can beat Trump, which in my opinion is anyone but Bernie. Otherwise everyone has their own opinion about who is most formidable. To me, it was clearly Kamala Harris, which is in… Read more »

Sorry, but if you want to convince people to stop worrying about or suspecting prior and/or potential electronic voting system hacking in this country, you’re going to have to use more convincing arguments than your fact-free absolutest declarations, making claims with a level of certainty that you can’t possibly have about things you don’t know and can’t prove, and insulting peoples’ intelligence and ridiculing them as nutty conspiracy theorists for not agreeing with your unsourced, unevidenced opinions.

Here anastasjoy, this article is a must read for you: “The Myth of the Hacker-Proof Voting Machine” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/21/magazine/the-myth-of-the-hacker-proof-voting-machine.html

Thanks. I’ve already read that. It doesn’t make a strong case forth let wing CT that’s distracting us form massive Republican voter suppression efforts, which probably wouldn’t be so massive if they could just change votes on machines.

You completely evaded the facts, and jumped right back into your patronizing “stop with the election hacking CT distraction don’t dare go there shut up” denial.

Try again.

“I’m getting exhausted from 15 years of talking people on our side down off this particular conspiracy ledge, and after today, I’m just ready to pack everything in. I didn’t need this crap today.” Wow. Really? Let’s see if I am understanding your logic: Mob Boss Trump and his gang of Rethugs who have already demonstrated over and over again that there is no limit to their kleptocratic criminality and propensity to cheat and abscond with what isn’t theirs, by any means necessary, no matter how immoral, unethical, illegal, unfair, and traitorous…wouldn’t dare to cheat in an election, and anybody… Read more »

Oh, and in case you are tempted to deflect my arguments with an Appeal to Ignorance fallacy by claiming that I am not technically proficient to disagree with you as you apparently claim some kind of technical expertise wth your vague reference to “having worked with Ohio voting machines”, I should disclose to you that I have 30 years working in Silicon Valley on computer technology, both software and hardware engineering, as well as web based software, networking, internet applications, encryption systems, and telecom. You’ll be wasting your time trying to win arguments based on semantics games or attempts to… Read more »

I agree wholeheartedly, Jason. The lack of urgency and outrage from the ever-increasing exposure of the vulnerabilities and insecurity of our election systems across the country, as we watch one expert after another sound the alarm while readily available fixes and solutions are blocked and stalled by criminal Republican traitors in federal and state government, is mind boggling. Aside from using the RICO organized crime statues against the Republican Party and taking them down like the mob, I am at a loss as to how we can save our democracy. One thing that really irks me is the patronizing attitude… Read more »
