The pundits who have said that Donald Trump is scared spitless of impeachment proceedings are undoubtedly right, because the White House is going to every length possible to stall, deflect, obfuscate, and yes, obstruct. The latest salvo from the administration is a scorching letter to Congress, saying the White House refuses to cooperate with the House impeachment inquiry, calling it a “constitutionally invalid” investigation of a duly elected president. The Hill:

“Given that your inquiry lacks any legitimate constitutional foundation, any pretense of fairness, or even the most elementary due process protections, the executive branch cannot be expected to participate in it,” White House counsel Pat Cipollone wrote in a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the three House committee chairmen leading the impeachment inquiry.

President Trump cannot permit his administration to participate in this partisan inquiry under these circumstances.” […]

Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, also said Tuesday that he would not testify before the House Intelligence Committee in defiance of a subpoena, echoing the administration’s argument that the impeachment inquiry is illegitimate.

The battleground now is the floor of the House of Representatives. The GOP is arguing that the inquiry is invalid, minus a House floor vote, and the Democrats are arguing that the committees bringing the inquiry already have the full authority that they need to conduct an impeachment inquiry. This is the next move on the chess board.

Trump and his GOP allies argue the inquiry is invalid unless the House takes a floor vote to authorize it, as was done with the inquiries into former Presidents Nixon and Clinton.

Republicans also want a vote because it would put vulnerable Democrats on the record supporting an impeachment inquiry, and because they want equal subpoena power as had been granted in the past.

“In the history of our nation, the House of Representatives has never attempted to launch an impeachment inquiry against the president without a majority of the House taking political accountability for that decision by voting to authorize such a dramatic constitutional step,” Cipollone wrote in the letter to Pelosi and key committee chairmen.

Pelosi has said such a vote is unnecessary, and the Speaker almost certainly wants to avoid forcing her members to take that politically risky vote.

Democrats say that they don’t need to take a vote because the committees already have subpoena power thanks to rules changes made when Republicans controlled the House. Pelosi, in a letter last week to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), said that existing House rules provide committees “with full authority to conduct investigations for all matters under their jurisdiction, including impeachment investigations.”

All of these procedural and tactical considerations to the side, bear in mind that Trump has put out the call to his allies to get him out of this. He is terrified. He regards impeachment as a “mortal threat.”

Interesting that an innocent man, who got “FULL EXONERATION!” and upon whom it was pronounced “NO COLLUSION!” should be so worried, wouldn’t you think?

And none other than Kellyanne’s husband, George Conway, has chimed in on what he thinks the merits of the White House letter are.

My God. I never thought I never thought I would say Watergate was a picnic in the park, but I’m saying it now. This has been the Week from Hell in Washington — and it’s only Tuesday.

Dipshit should, as a lawyer, be aware that this is the investigation BEFORE the charges are filed. It’s the grand jury before the indictment, not the courtroom with judge and jury (which is the Senate).
Can’t they find lawyers who are competent and can get Himself to understand anything more than a small child?

Any lawyer of that bare minimum caliber has long fled the scene and/or has no interest destroying their own rep by being associated with this bunch. And I promise that almost no judge they are likely to face will be amused by such arguments the amateurs are aiming for.

As the Dems see it in all likelihood, they win either way. Drumph either leaves, gets ousted or gets voted out next year. Public sentiment turning against him so quickly, coupled with his panicky reactions to current events, were always the main means to an end. So please, keep fighting, DJT. It’ll just make your eventual defeat that much more painful.

Exactly!!!! keep on trucking ds.

All of this ‘Total Stonewall’ smacks of a strategy to force every committee request into a subpoena, every subpoena into a judicial hearing, and every judicial decision into and appellate court, eventually to the SCOTUS for a decision by a conservative majority. This most certainly is Moscow Mitch’s end game for stealing the appointment for Gorsuch and steamrollering the seat for Kavanaugh. It remains to be seen if SCOTUS will play along by hearing the flood of BS arguments from tRump’s lawyers (and DOJ) or simply shut the door and remand these cases. It will also be of great interest… Read more »

I totally agree 100% he got away with it doing the RM probe it work for him but time this it is totally difference “his goose is cooked” he need to resign ASAP to save the tax payers money.

Remember that Kavanaugh and Gorsuch are only two votes. The real swing vote in all this will likely be Roberts, no friend of ours by any means but a man obsessed with legacy and no fan of handing Trump, in the words of Emperor Palpatine, “unliiiiiiimited power!”

Everything this mushroom noodle is doing falls into his category of make it worse because it always pushed the meters in the other direction … more support from his base, a little more cat nip for the Senate to massage into REAL threats to our Nation, this week especially, has made blithering idiots of the Republicans that are the unholy mice in OUR HOUSE … a gaggle of the bleepers claiming such pitiful language about how the Dems are SO WRONG to attempt anything in regards to the orange weasel in the WH, without that unneeded vote to advance their… Read more »
