Breaking: Trump Sues Elijah Cummings To Block Subpoena Of Financial Records

The Washington Post just broke this story at 9:32 a.m. EDT:

President Trump and his business on Monday sued House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) in a bid to block a congressional subpoena of his financial records.

The lawsuit seeks a court order to prevent Trump’s accounting firm from complying with what his lawyers say is an improper use of subpoena power by congressional Democrats.

“Democrats are singularly obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the President politically,” the filing by Trump claims.

As you recall Cummings subpoenaed Mazars, Trump’s accounting firm, last week, in order to obtain copies of financial records. This is standard congressional oversight and nothing out of the ordinary — on Cummings’ part that is. On Trump’s part, to go bonkers over a subpoena is…well, it’s not business as usual but it is normal Trump behavior.

The suit is filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

A friend shared an expletive phrase in Korean with me once. The literal phrase was “last bang kennel dung,” which loosely translates as “the dog shit is done exploding.” Or, maybe in this case, it’s just started. In any event, this week is off to a roaring start.

“Democrats are singularly obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the President politically,” the filing by Trump claims. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Wow. It’s like the Trump folks weren’t paying attention to the 8 years before Trump waddled his way into the White House. Maybe Don the Con could have a heart to heart chat (after someone loans him a heart, that is) with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, a couple of folks who spent years as REPUBLICANS were “singularly obsessed with finding something they [could] use… Read more »

Though Peck in Ghostbusters is a dick (or “dickless”), this speech from him seems apropos: “Forget it, Venkman. You had your chance. But you thought it’d be more fun to insult me. Well, now it is my turn, wiseass.”

Always remember – Republicans are masters of projection, or just plain ol’ accusing Democrats of what they (Repubs) do themselves. It’s one of the few things they’re really, really good at 😉

It’s amazing isn’t it, all this posturing, how can they possibly not know the House, ours for now, has the ultimate rights of oversight for Congress and, at different levels. virtually everything that costs money to the tax payers, affects our security, the lower courts, has the right to censure the president, start the process of impeachment, etc.,. Elijah Cummings, let’s see, probably along with Mr. Schiff and Mr.Adler, they make a formidable group, add Ms. Waters, and you have a nest of powerful Democrats, taking giant steps toward putting the Dotard down like the rabid animal he has become… Read more »

Trump has threatened many lawsuits that related to his finances and/or financial dealings. If I’m not mistaken more often than not he never followed through or backed down as the process unfolded. And he’s also wound up losing. Also & again if I’m not mistaken ALL of that is something that Cummings could request as part of discovery and it’s highly unlikely Trump’s lawyers could block that discovery. Not only would that in and of itself provide a stream of embarrassing news stories that would steal numerous news cycles from Trump, that history would cause him to lose this particular… Read more »

This whole thing is emblematic of his struggles since Inauguration Day: left with nothing but bad options because he screwed himself out of any of the good ones due to his lack of impulse control and/or self-awareness.

He might just as well tattoo the word “GUILTY!” on his forehead.

Maybe that’s what all that orange makeup is already hiding. Or maybe he’s already got the word ASSHOLE’ tattooed there already and that’s why all the orange makeup.

Right above the word ASSHOLE, two words in smaller type but bold,”PROVEN STUPID”,.

Really? I thought that tattoo actually said “ARREST ME!”

And let’s not forget a scarlet ‘L’ for loser on the forehead too!

Just heard about this one…it’s a stall tactic. Trump has neither the legal firepower nor the sympathetic court standing to make this happen. Unlike him, Cummings and his committee actually PAY for good legal talent.

As a non-lawyer, my first question is to what degree someone “owns” records they’ve handed off to a financial company. The subpoena isn’t for Trump, and isn’t his to comply with…it’s to another entity for records in their possession.

I’m going to assume that Congress acting as an investigatory authority that has evidence of wrongdoing works legally the same as the FBI or police doing the same…and that this will be what the courts eventually say, that you can’t stop authorities and a company you defrauded from sharing records of those crimes.

NEW RULE:

If congress cannot indict a sitting president, then The Orange One cannot sue congress for doing their job!

Time to impeach him and send him and his criminal family to prison for a very long time!

Requesting financial records is standard congressional oversight and nothing out of the ordinary. Needing to subpoena them in order to see them is NOT standard.

I imagine if we had access to the files on tRump’s legal history over the last several decades, we’d find that this is what he does to delay, defy, deny any kind of progress on the many suits filed against him. I’m sure he counter sues time and again, knowing that the little guys that go up against him have neither the time, money or sheer obstinacy to keep going. I expect that any kind of legal action we the people and our government try to use to hold him and his mob accountable will be met with endless legal… Read more »

Hi UrsulaFaw. How’s your mouth? Good to have you back. Trump has managed to avoid trouble all his life by filing lawsuits. I imagine it will be one of his final acts on this earth.

Interesting thought…he files a lawsuit from his deathbed because, by God, he’s not ready to die yet!
