Throwing Joe Biden Under The Bus Is The Stupidest Thing The Democrats Can Do

“What we can’t let voters do is think they can get the same policies with someone they like better, like Joe Biden — someone who would fight for them but who doesn’t have the crass edge,” said the former White House staffer. “I hope CNN has Kirsten Gillibrand on every minute of every day. Love it. Bring it. She’s easy to destroy. If you’re the president, or the RNC, you’re more worried about someone who looks like Biden — someone who has more mainstream appeal, who blue-collar workers could identity with.”

One former White House official outlined a theory of the case that has gained some traction: Trump’s policies will continue to be popular all the way through his reelection campaign, but his approval rating will never crack 45 percent — creating an opening for Biden, or someone like him, to recapture the loyalty of white Rust Belt Democrats who helped elect Trump in 2016.

Biden not only has great appeal to rust belt Democrats, but he has two other advantages, being well known and being a part of the good Obama years, which after this circus side show we’ve been subjected to in the era of Trump, is a much dreamed of return to sanity. Uncle Joe has a hell of a lot of fans. But Democrats seem bound and determined to throw him under the bus.

Apparently we have learned nothing from 2016. The presidential race is not about policies. It should be, but it’s not. It’s about having a candidate that can push buttons and win. In a perfect world, you get somebody like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, who can both affect people positively on a gut level and they have great policies and leadership abilities. There is no question in my mind, whatsoever, that any one of our Democratic presidential candidates would fill the job successfully and bring sane leadership back to Washington. (With the exception of Gillebrand, and that’s a piece for another day.) That is not the issue. The issue is: Who can beat Donald Trump? Who can get votes away from the people who are sick of Trump but too sexist or racist to consider voting for Warren or Harris? Or Buttigieg? It seems obvious to me that Joe Biden is the person we need to nominate and end this nightmare of Trump.

Run because you have strengths that no other Democratic candidate does, including your depth of experience and connection to the Obama presidency. Run because your populist image fits the Democrats’ most successful political strategy of the past generation. Run because you will never have another chance — and because you are not afraid of losing.

…the country needs to maximize the chances that Trump’s presidency ends as soon as possible, certainly by Jan. 20, 2021. A Biden run helps that cause. It does so by broadening the Democrats’ options. It creates a stronger field, from which the strongest nominee can emerge. (The downsides of a big field are often exaggerated: A divisive primary didn’t undermine Barack Obama in 2008. It helped him.) If Biden is as flawed as his critics think, he won’t win the nomination.

All candidates are flawed. Every single last one. If we wait to find the perfect candidate, flawless in every way, Hell will freeze over and the Republicans will win. Again. We need to drop the purity crap and consider the only question that matters at all: which Democrat can beat Trump? Nothing else matters. I say we don’t throw Joe Biden under the bus, because in doing so, we may blow this election. The bottom line is this: Post-Trump America needs to heal. Biden is somebody who reasonably can be expected to do that. Uncle Joe is known and he has a lot of charm. And what we’ll doubtlessly see in the primaries, is how effectively he kicks Trump’s ass. Now is the time to put practicality above purity because the stakes have never been higher.

I keep hearing trump, in my head say, ‘ creepy grabby uncle joe.’ Over and over. I think Joe is not the one. I do not understand how he has not learned to keep his hands to himself. Until he throws his hat in, it doesn’t matter anyway. Saying that, if he did decide to run, and won the nomination, I would vote for him, of course.

Well, I don’t know what is true, but heavy mettle just put a diary up saying that Biden’s camp is blaming bernie for these grabby allegations. Jeez.

Unfortunately, I think Joe loses us five women for every blue collar white male we manage to pry away — and not because of “throwing him under the bus” for these alleged gropings, but because the Anita Hill thing continues to impact us as long as Clarence Thomas is on the Supreme Court. All it would take is one or two terrible anti-woman decisions — and those awful anti-choice bills states are passing across the country are inexorably making their way to the Supreme Court. Also, I think once he actually campaigns people will remember how tepid and dull he… Read more »

Enjoy your writing and usually agree with your position. Today I must disagree. Joe deserves to thrown under the bus as far as Al Frankin was, perhaps further; Frankin was a comedian, at the time, and did something stupid. Biden has been a political person for a very long time and should know better.
Then to state that Trump fears Biden the most … well that just reminds of the Briar Rabbit; please don’t throw me into the ring with Joe.

You are right Ursula with everything written in your article. This mindless, “I believe women,” mantra and the other one, “In this era of the Me-too movement…,” is leaving me scared, disgusted and exasperated. Journalists are using inflammatory words to “talk up” Joe Biden’s alleged infractions with women. While I don’t doubt that Biden has an exuberant personality, is a “huger” and touches people when he’s happy to interact with them, I don’t believe that these two women were sexually assaulted. Their descriptions of their encounters with Biden DON’T rise to the level of even inappropriate sexual touching. They are… Read more »

The old DK gang is ripping ol’ Joe and it’s so predictable. If you don’t like his issues or history, okay, but this riff on him being handsy? Are you kidding? THIS is the hill we die on? Joe Biden stands to close to women? We’re not gonna be happy until Trump beats some feel-good look-how-woke-we-are candidate in 2020. And we’ll supply him with one. Because hey — any country that put DJT in the White House is gonna go for Kamala Harris, right? I’m depressed.
