Nancy Pelosi is right. And SO much smarter than you think.

So, Nancy Pelosi won’t allow formal impeachment hearings in the House unless she is sure that the Democrats can drag along at least enough of those pesky Republicans to make for a “Who shot JR?” style finale in the Senate, huh? because it’s so, like divisive. Well, hell! Where are the tar and feathers when you really need them?!? This is what you get for putting a crazy old lady from California in charge!

Lord and little fishes, everybody breathe into a paper bag for a minute, will ya? I’ve argued both sides of this coin in the past. For the most part, I have fallen firmly on the side of letting the will of the people do this job at the ballot box in 2020, simply to avoid making this clownish na;;ot each a martyr for his pig headed, racist slob supporters. In the run up to 2018, I strongly advised that everybody STFU about impeachment if we won, to keep his depressed base from showing up to protect him from the threat. We all saw how that turned out. And on one occasion, I felt that Trump had crossed the line into being an actual threat to national security, and that the political consequences were overridden by the constitutional necessity to make a stand.

This is why we currently have a Speaker Pelosi, and not a Speaker Ocasio-Cortez, or a Speaker Talib, or any of the other young guns. There is nobody on Capitol Hill, on either the Republican or the Democratic side, who is more attuned to, or more adept at, running and executing political calculations. Most certainly not the Presidential rectal chiropractor, Mitch McConnell. And in this decision, Speaker Pelosi is right, on two counts.

Nancy Pelosi is right. Impeachment is an incredibly divisive course of action. Mainly because the founding fathers purposely made it that way. By requiring a 2/3 vote in the Senate to convict, they ensured that the “high crime or misdemeanor” be so high that even the Presidents own party couldn’t stomach him. Make no mistake, the founding fathers were as vindictive as hell. If we fucked up at the ballot box, they wanted us to suffer for our sins, no cheap do overs. But there still had to be a constitutional way fo allow for the removal of a truly dangerous duly elected President, before he became an unduly elected King.So far, only Richard Nixon was onerous enough to be convicted in the Senate, and he knew it, which is why he tucked his tail between his legs and skedaddled for San Clemente.

Nancy Pelosi is right, the numbers don’t support impeachment. Not only in the Senate, but also in almost every national poll so far taken. For all of his millions, and all of his online petition signatures, Tom Steyer has not noticeably moved the needle. The number of Americans who want to see Donnie DImshit impeached is still 12-16 points underwater. That’s not just Trump’s base talking, there are a whole lot of Americans out there, who while they view this president as an insufferable prick, still don’t think that he should be given the heave-ho. Right now we have a historically unpopular President, and an unsettled GOP base, why risk not only motivating his base, but also aggravate a good sized chunk of the voting public that wants to spank him themselves? I want to throw a little historical tidbit at y’all. In 2012, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker made such a cheesy pain in the ass of himself that the Democrats were able to force a recall election, the state version of impeachment. They did this in the face of strong public opposition in Wisconsin to the recall. Not only did Walker survive the recall, he went on to win reelection to another 4 year term in 2014, the Democrats punishment for their overreach. If I can remember that, you think Nancy Pelosi can? Impeachment against public sentiment is a risky venture at best, and self destructive at worst.

But here’s the second reason that Nancy Pelosi is right. I don’t believe for a hot nanosecond that this was some accidental, off the cuff flub by Nancy Pelosi. She was making this statement on purpose, and in direct response to external stimuli. That stimuli is coming from a combination of Democratic House members calling for immediate impeachment proceedings, as well as media figures calling the House investigations, “informal impeachment proceedings.” In the age of Trump, Pelosi knows that the mere attachment of the word impeachment makes any findings connected to it “Fake News!” to Trump’s moronic sheeple. She is trying to separate her fledgling investigations from the stigmata that the word impeachment carries with it.

There is an old phrase that people like to use, even around here, and especially in regards to former President Barack Obama; “He’s playing three dimensional chess while the other guy is playing checkers.” Well, as I see it, with this move, Nancy Pelosi is exercising political quantum physics while Trump is banging a rock against a piece of flint, trying to invent sparks. What I see here is Nancy Pelosi embarking on a mind fuck of Biblical proportions. Here’s how it goes.

What Nancy Pelosi just said is akin to, “I don’t really care what you find, this orangutan in a Cardin suit is not worth risking our chances in the 2020 election. Impeachment is off of the table!” What comes next? She turns corruption seeking missiles like Jerry Nadler and Adam Schiff loose to turn up every last despicable thing Trump has ever done in their publicized hearings. All without the taint of the word “impeachment” attached to them. Peoples jaws drop in shock at the audacity of this cheap huckster, and how easily they were conned. Nancy says, “I know, he’s a nasty piece of work, but what do you want me to do about it?” Your kid never wants that 1-A-Day in the morning until you tell him that he can’t have it. Take impeachment off of the table, and watch the punlic polling numbers for impeachment go through the roof when people start seeing his cheap scams unravel on live television.

This is a win-win situation for Pelosi and the Democrats. By taking impeachment off of the table, they make it the forbidden fruit, and just provide the evidence, and wait for the surly masses to demand it. And if it gets too late in the cycle to impeach? Who cares. There have been 18 months of disastrous televised hearings, all of the Pampers President’s sins laid bare, with no other remedy in sight, except at the ballot box.I can do nothing except to shake my head in wonder at this move.

I just hate it when I have to change my mind:^( We so need the orange slime ball in prison – before he does any more damage to our country. Problem is that impeachment wouldn’t do anything but stir up his gross base. And it is still a long time until 2020.

Sorry, I gotta go with Malcolm Nance, Charlie Pierce and Sarah Kenzior on this. We need televised hearings, bright lights and sworn testimony.

Who says the Rs will honor or allow a fair election?

Every day he is in office is another day closer to autocracy.

I totally agree – trump has defiled our government. On the other hand, impeachment in the House won’t get rid of him and there is no way the Senate is going to vote to convict. With all the House committees investigating and holding public hearings and with Mueller bringing more indictments – which he is going to do, just maybe there will be enough criminality that even the criminal repugnatcons will have to come out against him.

Durrati, I’m sorry but until I see actually SUCCESSFUL actions in that direction, I’m not buying that. You are surely old enough to remember this same song playing for the more competently ran(!) W admin (which still isn’t saying much about the latter). If THEY couldn’t pull it off, neither will this crowd.

I too am worried over the McConnell/Russian crowd once again stealing an election. To me it is CLEAR the GOP conspired with Russia to swing the election to Trump: 3 states, 5 districts, 77,000 votes, in a 3-million vote LOSS! That’s theft! They have been doing it for years and will continue. BUT the ONE WAY to PREVENT them stealing the EC AGAIN is to ensure that the election is NOT CLOSE anywhere! They can only steal an election when it is close — when they refuse to count all the ballots, for instance; or when they refuse to allow… Read more »

As much as it grieves me to ever agree with anything, I agree with this analysis.

Make no mistake…if there was a button I could push that would send Trump and the rest of his crooks straight to prison, I’d have already mashed it. Absent that, I am content enough to follow Pelosi’s lead here and go slow. We’ve got the Legislative Temple of Doom sealed off until 2020, thanks to our getting the House back. Now we work to build on our foothold.

I agree with Nancy, given that unless he actually does shoot someone in the middle of 5th avenue, there is no chance of conviction in the Senate. My new dream scenario is that Mueller continues the investigation until mid-summer 2020. He then starts releasing the indictments in a steady drip, one or two a week, culminating in the grand finale, the actual report, the last week of October.
Anyone have Mueller’s email?

It’s particularly risky to be pushing this before Mueller’s investigations are complete. Because with failure to remove in the Senate, the investigations will basically be discredited and impossible to justify. The media will sell this idea to the public: he’s been exonerated so why waste time on further investigations? We’d lose bigly if this idea went through, as satisfying as it might momentarily be. In the end it would be a train wreck for Democrats.

That’s a Cardin suit? It looks like it came off the rack at Value World.

I totally agree with this, and cannot believe that so many people think that men with the inevitable defeat of removal in the Senate, we’d be making some kind of big, powerful statement, and they’re reviling Pelosi for basically common sense. Look: you know what happens when removal fails. McConnell controls the process & the optics. His cronies in the Senate use the trial to showboat endlessly about witch hunts.Trump declares victory when removal fails, says he is exonerated and that investigations should therefore be shut down. Media will agree, and sell the GOP narrative to the public. (Anyone remember… Read more »

That should be “EVEN with the inevitable defeat …”

Unless the Chump would be convicted in the senate, impeachment is probably counterproductive. I agree with the author and Pelosi, the time is not yet right, and may never be. Even if Dump was extruded out of the White House, incoming would be the horrid Pence, who by virtue of competence may be a bigger threat. Better to keep up a steady stream of embarrassing revelations and criminal referrals, indictments, etc., and rub ALL Repukes’ noses in the foul mess, heading into 2020. Ultimately, I want Crump and his supporters in prison or otherwise destroyed, and I’m patient.

Agree with you 100% Murfster. We need to take him out at the ballot box, then we know “the people ” have rendered their opinions of trump!

Murf, I really hope and pray you are right about this! I DO agree with you. I have long thought Pelosi the smartest politician in Congress! She is exactly who the Dems need in that position! Once again, self-styled progressive and democratic socialists start screaming that they want all their candy NOW even if it kills them. Once again, one of my main concerns is that Dems will, once again, steal defeat from the jaws of victory…. as is their wont….
