Even The Animal World Has Donald Trump’s Number

Donald Trump is a documented germaphobe who has even called shaking hands “barbaric.” And he doesn’t like animals. He has no pet at the White House, and no plans to get one, making him the first president in modern history without a furry companion. He became upset once when first wife Ivana brought home a poodle.

“Donald was not a dog fan,” Ivana Trump wrote about her former husband in her memoir, Raising Trump. When she brought a poodle named Chappy into their home, Trump fought back. But Ivana’s love of dogs would not be quashed: “It’s me and Chappy or no one!” she told him. And he eventually acquiesced—but never seemed to grow all that fond of that poodle.

The feeling was mutual: When the president went near Ivana’s closet, “Chappy would bark at him territorially,” she wrote.

Trump not only doesn’t want pets around him, he doesn’t think his vice president should have pets either, because pets aren’t ritzy enough.

When it was reported last January that the Pences would be moving some of their family pets—which include two cats, a rabbit, and a snake—into the Naval Observatory, Trump ridiculed the menagerie to his secretary, according to a longtime adviser. “He was embarrassed by it; he thought it was so low class,” says the adviser. “He thinks the Pences are yokels.”

So Trump can’t stand animals and the feeling is mutual. Some, apparently, don’t even need to be in the same room to be appalled, like this perspicacious pootie.

Contrast that reaction with this cat, who sought the lap of kind and gentle Jamal Khashoggi, when he was being filmed for a documentary. Wonder what Trump would do with a pootie upstaging him? Not display this level of humor and grace, I’ll venture to say.

Khashoggi said, “let’s add this shot into the documentary.”

If you’re wondering about the photo of Trump that sits atop this article, it’s Trump’s head on another man’s body, (witness the muscles and flat stomach) and it had nothing to do with Hurricane Harvey.

Photo agency Getty also featured a picture of Mr Smith with the caption: “Brandon Smith carries his two cats, Fry and Bender, to dry land from their flooded and evacuated home on June 12, 2008 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

“Much of the city has been evacuated as the Cedar River continues to rise to record levels. More rains are predicted over the next few days.”

The Iowa newspaper said, one year later, the cats were alive and well. Their current status is uncertain. What is clear, however, is Mr Trump did not rescue them from the rising waters.

You know Trump doesn’t like cats for the same reason Hitler didn’t, he can’t order them around. But maybe we could get Trump a dog, say a nice little Chihuahua — and we’ll make sure it’s papers are in order, too.

The truth of the matter is that animals see our authentic selves and in Trump’s case, that’s the deal breaker.
