John McCain calls the Helsinki Summit “A Tragic Mistake’

Today, Republican U.S. Senator John McCain called Donald Trump’s meeting in Helsinki with Vladimir “a tragic mistake” and a new low point for the United States.  He points out that President Trump failed to defend his country.

According to US News, McCain wrote, “Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we are – a republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and abroad.”

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also criticized President Trump’s by saying that it was a “missed opportunity by President Trump to firmly hold Russia accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a strong warning regarding future elections. This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russia as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves.”

Republican Senators Jeff Flake and Ben Sasse were likewise critical.  Flake said, “I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression.  This is shameful.”

Sassy wrote, “A better thing, Mr. President, would be to declare: “Russia is the enemy of America and our allies, and we will expose and respond to their continued cyber-attacks against our nation.”

And what about Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain?   She tweeted, “I don’t have anything quippy to tweet.  I’m horrified – and have never been more proud of the fact that Putin hates my father so much he personally sanctioned him on Russia’s enemies list.”

For once, Meghan, we agree with you.
