Some dreams never die and it would appear that Donald Trump’s vanity project wall on the Mexican border is one of them. Greg Abbott invited Trump to tour the southern border with him on June 30 and Trump issued this statement.

“The Biden Administration inherited from me the strongest, safest, and most secure border in U.S history and in mere weeks they turned it into the single worst border crisis in U.S history. It’s an unmitigated disaster zone.”

I wonder if Abbott told Trump to bring his own battery operated swamp cooler? Or, better yet, a generator that he can hook up to his private jet? I wouldn’t count on the lights or the A/C being on while you’re down there, Donald. The rest of Texas isn’t.

This invitation is interesting for a couple of reasons. First of all, QAnon and right-wing thinking has a stronghold in Texas. QAnon held a conference in Dallas over Memorial Day. Rumors of Trump secretly being president and in charge of the military abound in the Lone Star State. So Abbott asking Trump to play elder statesman at this time and place is rife with significance.

Secondly, it shows that Abbott has thrown in entirely with the Trump faction of the GOP, not that this is surprising. A number of other right-wing governors and lawmakers have as well, but they’re not all asking Trump to come down and give expert opinion on matters in their state. Abbott is.

Trump’s vanity wall may go down in history as a cursed proposition, much as certain caves and tunnels in the Egyptian desert were said to be cursed by the pharaohs, who resented people trying to build too close to their sacred burial sites, and so would cause landslides and cave-ins, according to legend. Although in Trump’s case, incompetence is a far more rational explanation for his fits and starts wall construction than mysticism, it has the same flavor, that of a doomed expedition.

Nevertheless, Abbott and Trump will provide good Fox News fodder in two weeks.

  1. Battery-powered dehydrator for air. Unless you’re in west Texas, you won’t need a swamp cooler – the humidity is already over 70%.

WTF does Abbot think the former guy is going to do for Texas? He’s out of actual power, and doesn’t have the support of all the remaining Rs, either.

  2. There are still a number of people who support Trump here. There’s houses in my neighborhood that have Trump signs and flags on display. I think Abbott is trying to rally those people for himself.

    • I lived in brownsville texas for years. The reason south texas loves the wall is because it provides good government jobs. Everybody knows it doesn’t work. My housekeeper had no problem crossing back and forth across the border. using the bridge which is how nearly everyone crosses. I have crossed that wall many times. it is a joke. but I guess if abbott wants to provide some more construction jobs on the border fantastic.

      • Even temporary jobs are something to be thankful for. Beyond all the issues about the wall, one issue that doesn’t get a lot of airplay is the wall’s effect on the environment.

No one asked the wildlife (let alone the human residents!) if they wanted a wall. The area along the border is a pristine and delicate ecosystem, which doesn’t appreciate the heavy machine work and the wholesale clearing of the corridor on each side.

  3. Texas needs to get their environmental house in order, if they can. Unfortunately, I am not talking about tree-hugging, but about my prediction (decades ago) that the southwest could become uninhabitable if human-friendly climates cannot be maintained. (Humans have a narrow range of temperatures where we can be comfortable without assisted heat or cold.)

  4. He won’t go. Former Guy doesn’t have a plane, and he wouldn’t be caught dead flying commercial. Of course, Pillow Guy might be able to help him out.
