We have a tendency to dismiss certain factions of the GOP, particularly the QAnon loons, as outliers and fools and beneath our contempt. While they may be all of those things, they nevertheless have more than a toe hold in today’s Republican party and their stars, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene are doing just fine. Greene raised over $3.2 million this quarter, which is stunning. A haul like this is impressive for anybody and for a first-term freshman? Unnerving. Politico:

GREENE RAKES IN THE GREEN: We have a scoop for you this morning: Freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), the controversial MAGA firebrand, raised over $3.2 million in the first three months of this year, according to a source close to her campaign. That eye-popping haul came from over 100,000 individual donors, for an average donation of $32. Greene did not self-fund this quarter, the source added.

That is a staggering sum of money for a House member, especially for a freshman who is more than a year out from her next election. For context, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), then a freshman, raked in $728,000 in the first quarter of 2019.

Greene appears to have actually benefited from all the controversies that have consumed her first few months in office. She directly fundraised off of Democrats’ decision to kick her off her committees for past incendiary rhetoric and warned her supporters that Democrats are trying to expel her from Congress. Greene is also still a fan favorite in Trumpworld: she met with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago last week and they posed for a video together.

“Over 100,000 individual donations says it all. The People are with Marjorie Taylor Greene and her America First agenda. It’s clear she’s the heir to President Trump,” said the source close to her campaign. “While politicians inside the Beltway attack her daily, Americans are rushing to stand beside the Notorious MTG as she fights tooth and nail on the House floor utilizing procedural tactics to shut down Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ hostage takeover of Congress.”

Greene is going to need to stockpile cash for her reelection campaign. While she represents a ruby red seat, her primary race could become one of the more expensive and closely-watched contests in the nation and she’ll have to run under new lines after redistricting.Anti-Trump forces are threatening to mobilize against her — including Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), who built a $2.2 million war chest of his own this past quarter. Meanwhile, sources in the state say polls are already being conducted to test potential GOP primary challengers.

One more point here: We’re starting to get a clearer picture of the post-Jan. 6 fundraising landscape. While there was speculation that Republicans would take a big hit, since many corporations froze their donations to lawmakers who challenged the election results, it looks like there was also energy on the right — especially among small donors — to rally around some Republicans under fire. Stay tuned: Campaign-finance reports are due on April 15.

This is scary. Greene is a doofus and she has no committee assignments and can therefore do nothing. So what does that tell you? That tells you that her constituents want her to be the gadfly, do nothing, know nothing. They want her to obstruct and annoy and they find that entertaining, apparently.

Republican voters don’t care about legislative accomplishments. They want bread and circus. They will eventually come to care about government after they have sufficiently crippled government. We saw how that worked in the Trump years. And despite how awful it was, 73 million people voted for the jerk to stay in power.

Do not blow past this without paying attention. This is serious as a heart attack and this is the handwriting on the wall, Greene’s massive first quarter haul. Like the serpent that ate it’s own tail, the GOP is the attention party. Just ask Matt Gaetz. “If you’re not making news, you’re not governing.”

I rest my case.

  1. I wonder if she used the same trick the tRump site used with multiple withdrawals from people’s accounts without their knowledge or permission. She’s certainly followed the tRump playbook in every other way, why not this?

  2. Greene has time on her hands now to fund raise without the impediment of committee appointments. for this reason, she should have been censured and still should be for her ongoing seditious commentary.

  3. I’d take the fundraising figures with a deer-friendly “lick” worth of salt considering this:

“Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), the controversial MAGA firebrand, raised over $3.2 million in the first three months of this year, according to a source close to her campaign.”

Note: “A source close to HER CAMPAIGN.”

This does NOT sound like an unbiased source. Until the actual campaign finance reports are made official, I wouldn’t believe MTG raised that much money. Just remember: Donald Trump was a “billionaire” but he never released his tax figures that could’ve backed up the claim.

  4. Like most woodworking projects, you have to start with a pile of wood, it can be rough, even a little crooked …

Then, you mill the wood into flat, straight pieces and get to work laying out the best cuts for a yield of ready-to-go stock … during all this you need to have a general idea what you are going to need to do the job …

In Ms. Greene’s case, she has an axe in her hands, standing in the middle of the forest and has no idea where to start … can’t find any boards has no idea what to do with them if she found them and when she gets to the GOP lair in the Capitol, she is one of the select people with nothing to do, fitting funding magnet, an axe lady with no purpose but to make noise and disrupt proceedings …

Something terribly wrong with this picture … some money people apparently, have some throw-away cash and she gets one vote for the GOP …. a vote outclassed by the majority Dems …

  5. Carol O’s right, my first thought, exactly.

Probably a few days to go when, not if, we will find out this is how they ALL did it this year. They being the Repukes, all of them.
