History does seem to repeat itself, first as tragedy and then as farce, and we may have hit the Deep Throat allegory of the capitol riot investigation. Come, let us reason together, as Lyndon Johnson used to say. You know the January 6 Committee’s hearing was canceled yesterday and will go forward today. Also, late yesterday, news broke in the Washington Post that Ginni Thomas’ involvement in interfering with the vote and the electors in Arizona was a lot more involved than had been previously known. Now, Thursday morning, Bennie Thompson announces that Thomas will be invited to testify. You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that something substantial, maybe even monumental, has just been uncovered. Axios:

Why it matters: The decision comes after public and private wavering among committee members in recent weeks over the importance of Thomas’ role in Jan. 6 and former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the election.

Driving the news: Emails obtained by the panel reveal correspondence between Thomas and legal scholar John Eastman, a central figure in former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

  • Other emails, reported by the New York Times, reveal that Eastman messaged a pro-Trump lawyer claiming to have insight into a “heated fight” between Supreme Court justices over whether to hear an election case.

What they’re saying: “We think it’s time that we, at some point, invite her to come talk to the committee,” Chair Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) told Axios.

  • Thompson said of the committee’s reasoning, “We have discovered in those Eastman [emails] some information that refers to Ginni Thomas,” but declined to go into further detail about what she’ll be asked.
  • Asked when the invite will go out, Thompson said, “Soon.”

This whole situation is in escalation mode. I would love to be a fly in the Thomas kitchen right now. I have a feeling that there is much wringing of hands and long faces.

Shit’s about to get real, folks. A few weeks ago pundits were proclaiming, “forget about impeaching Clarence Thomas.” I don’t know if we’ll be saying that a few weeks forward. The game just changed.

  1. It’s gonna be hard to convince people that Clarence had no idea what Ginni was up to. Most married people tell their spouse what they’re doing, even when it has no bearing on the spouse. As a Supreme Court Justice, there is very little that Ginni could do involving political activity that would not bear on decisions being made at SCOTUS. An indictment of Ginni may be enough to convince Clarence it’s time to retire.

  2. Yeah, well, we won’t get Thomas impeached no matter what happens. SCOTUS justices face the same 2/3 Senate vote to be removed as a President. Granted, a “conviction” (just 51 votes) might lead an honorable Justice to resign but that’s not exactly a word that one can associate with Clarence Thomas.
